Water play (2-3 years old)

You will need:
A large container/bucket (or a paddling pool, if you have one)
Jugs/watering can
Small containers/cups

In this activity,  your child can enjoy spending time filling the containers with water to different levels. Mark these on the containers using pen/masking tape etc., then let your child use the jugs/watering can to fill the containers to different levels.

Ask your child if they can show you their container full, half-full and empty.

Encourage your child to show different ways of controlling their pouring device by asking if they can fill their container slowly or quickly.

Icebreaker (3-4 years old)

You will need:
Some small toys/objects
container
water
space in your freezer

The night before you'd like to do this activity,  you'll need to place the small toys/objects into the container, fill it with water and place it into the freezer to freeze.

The next day when the toys are frozen into the ice,  your child will need to use different tools to try and break the toys free (for example - a spoon, child- friendly knife, rolling pin etc).

This is a great way to get your child to try and think of different methods to break away the ice, it will keep them engaged for a while and also help to keep them cool during the hot sunny days!

Other activities you can enjoy with your children to support learning in this area:

If you have ice cubes in your freezer, try creating some 'ice towers' with your child.

See how many pieces your child is able to stack on top of each other, talk to your child about whether it works better using one ice cube on top of the other or multiple ice cubes in each layer.

The Book Trust has kindly provided some support to keep families entertained. Here are some really fun activities and resources for you and your child to enjoy, there is also some things to do for any older siblings too:

Here is a super easy banana icecream recipe that you and your child can make togther that only requires bananas!
