Week 7 - Resources for home learning

Home learning April 2020

Week 1:
This week we'll focus on supporting your child’s mathematical development at home.

Colour set toys (2-3 years old)

You will need:
A variety of different coloured toys eg., cars, crayons, balls etc.,
( HINT:  try to add some of your child’s favourite toys to include their interests into the activity)

Work with your child to organise their toys into their different colour groups.
With each toy, encourage your child to say which colour they think it is, supporting them if they need help and working with them to put it into the correct colour set.
Once all of the toys are arranged into their groups, go through each colour and count out loud the number of objects in it, motivating your child to try and join in with your counting if they can.

Pasta number line (3-4 years old)

You will need:
A piece of paper
A pen
Dried pasta pieces
( HINT:  if you don't have pasta, you could use any similar small objects that can be counted)

Create a number list from 1 to 10 going down the piece of paper.
One by one, go through the numbers with your child, identifying each number as you come to it (giving your child the time to see if they can recognise it first).
Ask your child to count out the number of pasta pieces that match the number and place them next to the number on the paper.

Other activities you can enjoy with your children to support their mathematical learning

Go on a shape hunt around your home. You could make a tally chart with your child and get them to tick every time they find a different shape. Why not incorporate it into your daily exercise if you go out for a walk?

Do some drawing with your child, talk to them about the different marks that they are making eg., lines, circles etc. Try to use size language when describing their marks to support their learning - for instance  ‘you've drawn a little line now can you draw a big line?'

Search for  ‘The shape song swingalong’ on YouTube (or click HERE)  to watch the animated Barefoot Books song. Enjoy creating different shape movements whilst dancing with your child.
